Quote Blog 1

"Atticus said to Jem one day "I'd rather you shoot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."...
"Your father's right," she said. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing except make music for us to enjoy. They don't do one thing except make music for us to enjoy..."
This is a great quote because it comes up multiple times in the story like when Tom Robinson dies. One of the editorials in Maycomb even said that killing a cripple (which tom was) is an awful thing. He never hurt anyone and he certainly didn't need to be shot so many times just like in Chicago in 2014. The seventeen year old was walking away from police with a tiny knife and was shot 16 times. In his own way he was a cripple because he was a little bit troubled in in the head but he wasn't escaping a jail. The police in both instances didn't know the ( African-American ) men they shot and maybe that's a real problem with police not being involved in the community. They should be able to identify when a person needs more help than bullets. The way this kind of ties into my own life because as a (younger) child I was always out in the yard and sometimes I would find rat snakes under rocks. My neighbor would always kill the snakes and in a way it's like killing a mockingbird because all rat snakes do is eat rats and other pets. Even some king snakes in the yard would eat the venomous snakes so they do more than just sing pretty songs. This even ties in with the police shooting people they didn't know needed help because they weren't involved in the community because my neighbor didn't know that the snakes posed no harm and even got rid of the dangerous ones.

  1. I liked how well you compared what happened in the book and whats happening today, and how you tied everything in the book together
