Oppression Post 3- Seeming Contradictions- Conflicting Testimonies

The two passages in TKAM that I thought were contradictory to each other were the following:

"'Was this the first time you asked him to come inside the fence?' 'Yes it was.' 'Didn't you ever ask him to come inside the fence before?' 'I did not, I certainly did not.'" (246)
This was in Mayella's testimony.
The next quote is from Tom Robinson's testimony.
"...and she says, 'Naw, I got somethin' for you to do in the house. Th' old door's off its hinges an'fall's comin' on pretty fast.'" (258) Tom also said later in his testimony that it was not the first time that Mayella had asked him to come into his house.

These two quotes are super conflicting because one says that Tom was supposed to bust up a chiffarobe, and another says that he was supposed to fix a door. This is suspicious...
Also, Mayella said that it was her first time asking him to do something for her in the house. Tom says that it wasn't her first time asking him to fix something or go into the house to do something. Who to believe? Everyone in the jury believed Mayella, just because she was white and Tom was black. But, all the other evidence pointed to Tom being innocent and that Mayella was lying. THIS IS MADNESS!

  1. I love the picture at the end. Wasn't there another part in the story when Tom Robinson was talking about how he would pretty often do little chores around the house for her? I think that it was right before he said he felt sorry for her. I love the blog thought great job!
