Blog #5 - Go Set A Watchman
Henry says, "They're a public menace," referring to a car full of black people. The car is driving very fast and dangerously, but the statement still came from place of looking at African-Americans as reckless and less capable of being civil than white people.
"Do you want Negroes by the carload in our schools and churches and theaters? Do you want them in our world?" Said Atticus. Both of these comments are coming from an idea that people of color are dangerous, ugly, and not welcome. This relates to an event having to do with a Twitter comment in response to a question asked to H+M. Someone tweeted at H+M asking why they don't have black models for their clothes on advertisements in South Africa. The store responded saying that their workers chose models that "convey a positive message." Thus, implying that black people do not or that they convey a negative message. This is repulsive. It has nothing to do with how the specific models look, it's simply society telling people that white people are just overall better and more accepted. Especially given that a large population of H+M's shoppers are people of color, H+M should definitely start including more diverse models.
